An electric SUV designed for seven occupants elevates safety standards and ushers in a sustainable era: the Volvo EX90 marks the dawn of a fresh chapter for premium car manufacturing and zero-emission mobility. Beginning with the EX90, Volvo set out to unveil one new fully electric car annually, targeting an all-electric lineup by 2030. This strategy forms a cornerstone of the Swedish brand’s ambition to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
Unveiled in downtown Stockholm to honor its Swedish heritage, the flagship electric SUV was slated for initial production in the United States starting in 2023, with Chinese manufacturing following later. Volvo aimed for both production facilities to operate as climate-neutral sites. Rooted in Scandinavian design principles where form follows function, the EX90 combines clean proportions with advanced core computing, connectivity, and electrification architecture engineered to optimize safety, efficiency, and aesthetic appeal.
Safety specifications outpaced any prior vehicle in the marque’s history. The onboard system monitors both occupant attentiveness and external traffic surroundings. Equipped with high-performance core computers running NVIDIA DRIVE software alongside in-house Volvo algorithms, the vehicle processes data continuously from exterior cameras, radars, and roof-mounted lidar to construct a real-time, 360-degree perimeter view.
Luminar-supplied lidar units scan the road ahead across all lighting conditions and highway velocities, detecting small hazards hundreds of meters in advance to extend driver reaction windows. These sensors also reinforce the Pilot Assist function, introducing active steering assistance during lane changes. Inside the cabin, dedicated sensors and cameras track driver eye gaze concentration to identify drowsiness or distraction, issuing graded warnings before initiating a controlled stop if an emergency occurs.
Underpinning the digital ecosystem are NVIDIA DRIVE platforms Xavier and Orin, paired with Qualcomm Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms. This processing power supports over-the-air software updates and integrates Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to deliver high-performance 3D graphics across the instrumentation and head-up displays. A 14.5-inch center touchscreen houses the Google built-in infotainment interface, complemented by wireless Apple CarPlay and 5G network connectivity.
Cabin acoustics are managed by a Bowers & Wilkins audio system featuring Dolby Atmos and headrest-integrated speakers. Smartphone integration acts as a digital key, automatically unlocking doors and loading driver profiles upon approach. Sustainable materials populate the interior, incorporating recycled steel, recycled aluminum, and bio-based plastics.
Performance-wise, the initial twin-motor all-wheel-drive variant utilizes a 111 kWh battery pack paired with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors. In its high-output configuration, the powertrain delivers 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm of torque. Estimated driving range reaches up to 600 kilometers under the WLTP testing cycle, with DC fast charging facilitating a 10 to 80 percent replenishment in approximately 30 minutes. Additionally, the architecture incorporates hardware provisions for bi-directional charging applications.
